Review of Dinnerly's Grass Fed Beef Burger with Fried Pickles & Tangy Slaw

Burgers are about as simple & straight forward as you can get, and Dinnerly designs it's meals for the value conscience buyer, looking to get good food on the table without killing themselves in the kitchen.
My box arrived with 8 ounces of fresh grass feed beef, which is enough for two quarter-pound burgers. The meat tasted fresh and was good quality. The quarter pound patty did leaving me wanting for a bit more...but the taste was there.
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the potato buns. Admittedly, I had low expectations as bread doesn't typically travel all that well, but these buns stayed fresh through transit, and tasted quite good after the quick toasting I did right before serving.
Overall the burger was really just a plain burger, nothing too crazy exciting; it was a bit small, but it got the job done.
Along with the burger, Dinnerly came some some fried pickles and a tangy slaw. The cabbage for the slaw came pre-chopped, and was fresh. It was super easy to make the dressing, and I really liked how it all came together. The dressing also doubled as a dipping sauce for the fried pickles - and I thought it even tasted good on my burger.
Making the fried pickles is the only part that's a bit challenging, as you need to deep fry them. But the directions clearly explained the process. I did find the batter was a bit heavy, but at the end of the day, it's fried...and fried anything tastes pretty good.
The directions from Dinnerly where clear and I didn't have any problems following the recipe card. The meal was quick to make, and as advertised, it didn't take me more than 30 minutes to cook the whole thing.
If you're a big eater, I think you're probably going to walk away from the table still a bit hungry. While the food was good, the portions were small.
Overall, its a recipe that most people are going to be able to cook in their sleep, and if you're on a budget, the price tag is right. The food was good, if not spectacular.
Ingredients
All the ingredients that came with this recipe where fresh, clean and tasted right. If you order multiple recipes, the ingredients are all bundled together, which adds the need to sort ingredients, but that's not a huge deal.
included in the box for the burger recipe were:
- 8 oz of ground beef
- 2 potato buns
- 2 oz of mayo
- 1/2 oz of apple cider vinegar
- 1/4 oz buffalo style hot sauce
- 4 oz of bread and butter pickles
- 4 oz shredded cabbage blend
Dinnerly also has you provide a few ingredients from your own pantry. Fortunately, just about everyone will have this stuff. To the mix, you'll need to add:
- Sugar
- Salt
- Pepper
- Flour
- Oil
Making the dish
The instructions are clear, and making this dish is a breeze. Even with the added time of filming, I was able to get it done in less than 30 minutes. The only complex part is doing the fry on the pickles.
Like any time you fry food, you've got a make sure to use a deep pan, so the oil doesn't spill over (a fire hazard). You also need to make sure that the oil is the right temp (about 350 degrees) so the batter browns, without becoming too greasy.
The steps are broken down in 5 parts:
- Make the sauce & slaw - The cabbage comes pre-chopped, so all you have to do it un-wrap it and put it into a bowl. The sauce is a combo of the mayo, vinegar, hot sauce, sugar, salt and pepper. As you dress the slaw go light at first, and then add more as you taste it. You don't want it over dressed.
- Form the burgers - Divide the beef in half, make the patties and season with salt and pepper. Easy.
- Prep the batter - The batter is a simple combo of flour, water and salt and pepper. It's not the greatest I've ever had, and is kinda thick. But it's ok.
- Fry the pickles - Make sure you only fill the pan your using half way up the side to help make sure the oil won't spill. After heating the oil, make sure it's the right temp by testing it with a bit of batter - it should start to sizzle right away. As you dredge the pickles, fry them off, and then lay them on paper towel to drain.
- Cook the buns & burgers - I like how they have you toasting the burger buns. Doing so adds a nice texture. The burgers cook quickly in a pan over high heat. Make sure to season them well with salt and pepper. I kinda with they included a couple pieces of cheese.
The directions were clear and easy to follow. Other than the fried pickles, it's light on "jazz"...but you can easily add some condiments, dressing (tomato, lettuce, onion, etc) to make the burgers a bit more interesting. I actually ended up topping my burger with some of the slaw.
Taste
Everything tasted good. The pickles, which were a bit heavy on the batter, still tasted nice, and I actually ended up topping my burger with them, and a spoon full of the coleslaw.
The sauce/dressing for the coleslaw was tangy, with just a bit of spice & heat from the hot sauce. It worked well with the cool coleslaw, which was fresh and crunchy.
The burger itself tasted good. and the bun was soft and yummy. But it was small.
Taste wise, there's nothing to complain about here. It was a bit small, And it didn't blow me way with creativity but it was simple, tasty, easy to cook food, that you can crank out quickly for yourself and family.

Overall
This meal is simple and straightforward. It didn't require a ton of time, or any complicated cooking techniques. It's just good tasting simple food. I think kids and most picky eaters would do really well with it, so if you're looking for a family friend option, give this one a try.
Now, this recipe is not the best option for the foodies or adventurous eaters out there. There isn't really anything "exotic" or off the beaten path. But the foodie is not who it's designed for.
As I've mentioned, the burger is bit small. But it's tasty. And I enjoyed the side dishes.
At the $5 cost per serving price point, it's super budget friendly. But you don't get a few of the nice touches of other meal kit services - like printed recipe cards and pre-sorted ingredients.
